This book is about a girl called Ella. Her mum and dad split up and her mum remarries to Jake, and is having his baby. Trouble starts when mum gives birth…. This is a great book based on the ages 11+. Really enjoyable!!!

The longest whale song is about a girl, called Ella, who tries to save her mother out of coma with a whale song. After Ella’s mum has her baby she went into coma. Ella is heart broken, but she and her step-dad still has her half baby brother to look after. Ella struggles to learn at school, but then makes a new friend who knows a lot about whales. She starts making a book about whales. Her friend lets her hear a whale song and finds it calming. maybe her mother would like it? She lets her mother listen to it, while she is in coma. Do you think her mother will wake up in the end or not?

I really don’t like the cover of this book. The girl on the cover looks younger than she actually seems in the story but the story is very moving, and I really felt sorry for Ella. Jacqueline has done a brilliant job of writing the emotion in this. Jack (Ella’s new stepdad) is very upset, and so is Ella.
My favourite character is Ella because she was very brave, funny and kind. Plus her favourite animal is the whale, which is also one of my faves! I think she deals with the fact that her Mum is in a coma very well, which is another reason why I like her.
With friendship problems, family problems and bullying problems, as well as a few surprising twists, this novel is sure to be a hit with everyone! A great book to start off with if you haven’t read anything by Jacqueline Wilson before. I’d recommend this for ages 8+ although it deals with some very serious things so maybe 10+. It depends what you’re used to reading. 5/5!
